The most common regret after a custom closet is built is not the finish or the hardware. It is that the hanging space filled up on day one and the shoe shelves were full before the boxes were unpacked. Designers size a dressing room from an inventory of what will live in it, yet most clients are asked for a rough guess rather than a count.

This calculator does the count for you. Enter how many garments hang short (shirts, jackets, folded-over trousers), how many hang long (dresses, gowns, coats), how many pieces are folded and how many pairs of shoes you own, plus the spacing you like between hangers. It converts those into linear feet of short-hang rod, long-hang rod and shelving, then estimates the total run of cabinetry needed once short-hang rods are doubled up and shelves are stacked in towers. A growth buffer is added on top so the closet is not full the day it is finished.

What the math assumes

  • Long-hang garments are given 1.5 times the spacing you set for short-hang hangers, because coats and dresses are bulkier on the rod.
  • Short-hang rods are assumed to be double-hung (two rods in one section), so their cabinetry run is half their rod length; long-hang rods are single.
  • Folded pieces are assumed to sit in stacks of 6 on 12-inch-wide shelf bays, with 7 shelves per tower.
  • Shoes are assumed to fit 3 pairs per linear foot of shelf, with 10 shelves per tower; boots and oversized shoes take more room.
  • The growth buffer is applied to every category; drawers, accessory trays and hampers are not included in the cabinetry run.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the cabinetry run shorter than the rod length?

Short-hang garments are usually double-hung, with one rod above another in the same section, so 20 feet of short rod needs only about 10 feet of wall. Shelves are stacked in towers the same way.

How much hanging space does a typical person need?

It depends entirely on the wardrobe, which is why this tool asks for a count rather than assuming one. Enter your own numbers and adjust the spacing to see how quickly a boutique-style gap between hangers adds feet of rod.

Does the calculator include drawers and accessory storage?

No. Drawers, jewelry trays, belt and tie pull-outs and hampers are added on top of the cabinetry run shown here. Many designers plan one drawer bank of 24 to 36 inches per person.
